Herschel Gideon Smith 77, of Prineville passed away on December 28, 2010 with his family by his side.


In accordance with his wishes, no service will be held.


Herschel was born on April 16, 1933 in Okemah, Oklahoma to Dacree and Tilda (Fisher)

Smith.   After High School Herschel joined the U.S. Army. He served from 1953 to 1955.  Herschel moved to Prineville from the Harrisburg area in 1972. He decided to work on a ranch in the Paulina area and did this for five years. Herschel then moved back to Prineville and worked for Gary Irvin Construction until two years ago, when he retired due to health reasons.


Herschel married Betty  Snyder on December 29, 1993 in Harrisburg, Oregon. They were married in the home of his sister, Jenna Sweft.


Herschel enjoyed: woodworking, hunting, playing in pool tournaments, taking long drives through the woods, playing guitar, and really enjoyed visiting with his friends and his family.


He is survived by his loving wife Betty Smith of Prineville, OR; daughters Sharon Smith of Warm Springs, OR; Linda Smith of Portland, OR; sons Mike (Stacy) Smith of Seattle, WA; Troy Smith of Warm Springs, OR; Stepson John (Tammy) Snyder of Prineville, OR; Stepdaughter Cathy (Mark) Dramen of Prineville, OR; sisters Melva (Bill) Alves of Selma. CA; Virginia “Jenna” Sweft of Harrisburg, OR; 11 grandchildren, 2 step grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren, 3 step great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren. 


Herschel is preceded in death by his parents, one son,    Howard and several brothers and sisters.

Barbara Jean Mortimer 75, of Oakridge, Oregon and former resident of Prineville, Oregon passed away on December 26, 2010.

Celebration of Life will be held at 1:00 P.M. ; Saturday, January 29, 2011  at Circle Bar Golf Course in  Oakridge, Oregon.


Barbara was born August 15, 1935 in Cleo Springs, Oklahoma to Steve and Pearl Poor. She attended school in Buhl, Idaho. After school Barbara married Roy Long and they started their family.  They divorced in 1963. Barbara met and married Charles “Bud” Mortimer Jr. They were married on July 12, 1965 and enjoyed a long, loving marriage.


Barbara loved to golf, cook for her loved ones, play cards, go to casinos and she loved to watch birds and sit on the deck with friends and family.

She will be remembered as a loving Wife, Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother.


Barbara is survived by her loving husband Charles “Bud” Mortimer Jr. of Oakridge, OR;

Daughters Debbie (Dick) Darst of Eugene, OR; Lynda Dolan of Medford, OR; and Pamela (Ken) Bicart of Prineville, OR; 7 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren .


She is preceded in death by her parents and son Dennis Long who died when he was three years old.

Jilanie “Jill” Forbes 64, of Mitchell passed away on November 16, 2010.

The family will hold a celebration of life at a later date.


Jill was born on May 5, 1946 in Los Angeles, California to Harold John and Roma (Crockett) Carter.  After attending college for a period of time, she went to work as an Office Manager in the Portland area.  Jill worked for Elixir Industries in Aurora, Oregon as an Office Manager. She worked for worked her way up through the corporate ranks.

Jill work for Elixir Industries for 35 years.  She then retired and became a homemaker and rancher.


Jill enjoyed riding horses, spending time with her husband and family, she also enjoyed

working around her ranch.


Jill is survived by her husband Don Forbes of Mitchell, OR; daughter Martina (Todd) Davis of Oregon City, OR; sister Robin Bailey of Utah; brothers Court Carter of Washington; Forrest Carter of California; Randi Carter of Arizona and  two grandchildren.


She is preceded in death by her parents.

Violet Alberta McClellan 91, of Prineville, Oregon passed away December 1, 2010.

A graveside service will be held December 10, 2010 10:00 A.M. at Juniper Haven Cemetery,

Prineville, Oregon. Pastor Jack Collier will conduct the service.


Violet was born on February 24, 1919 in Winchester, Ohio to William Henry and Maggie Elizabeth (Massie) Ballein. She attended school in Winchester, Kentucky.  After attending school, Violet met and married John McClellan. They were married in Maysville, Kentucky on

November 23, 1942.  In 1950 Violet and John decided to move to Prineville. Even after John’s passing in 1960, Violet made the decision to stay in Prineville.


Violet loved: walking, singing, canning, cooking and helping others.


She is survived by her sister Rosemary Zimmer of Toledo, OH and many beloved friends.


She is preceded in death by her parents, 3 brothers and her husband John.


Violet was a member of the Ochoco Care Center family. She had lived there since 2001 and will

be miss by the staff.

Nevel, Robert Gary Sr. PDF Print E-mail

Robert Gary Nevel Sr. 63, of Prineville passed away from a short battle with cancer on October 12, 2010.

A private family burial was held on October 14, 2010 at Juniper Haven Cemetery in Prineville, Oregon. A celebration of life/ potluck will be held for Robert, 1:00 P.M. on Oct 23, 2010 downstairs at the Vets Club in Prineville, Oregon.


Robert was born in Prineville, Oregon on December 5, 1946 to Robert B. and Wilda (Young) Nevel. He was a graduate of Crook County High School. After school Robert entered  the U.S. Navy  and served with them for three years.  After his time with the Navy, Robert started a career in logging. He logged for DLCO Logging, for many years. This career path encouraged Robert to start his own logging business. Robert then went to work for Georgia Pacific where he did construction work and built roads.  This job took Robert to Indonesia, Russia, and Bolivia. He came back to Prineville in March of 2010, where he resided until his death.


His hobbies included: fishing, hunting, reading, loved to cook and being outdoors.


Robert is survived by his son Gary”Stub” Nevel Jr. of Prinville, Or; daughter Renissha Nevel of Prineville, Or; sister Linda Ortega of Prineville, Or; brother Alan Nevel of Prineville, Or; sister Toni (Bob) Endicott of Prineville,Or; granddaughter Tiffannie Ray, Tia Thiel, great granddaughter Bailee Ray and numerous nieces and nephews.


He is preceded in death by his parents.
